The location
This unique development is located in the very South of Italy, in the beautiful town of Sellia Marina. Sellia is a very ancient city as archaeologists found bronze coins dating back to the 3rd century BC as well as glass, precious metals and pottery. Byzantines settled this pretty area and founded Trichene, so rich it boasted three fine churches. The traveller can also discover the modern aspect of the city and visit the nearby Lambretta scooter museum, an icon of the 20th century. The development is 20km away from the regional capital: Catanzaro. This sophisticated city is located on the narrowest stretch of the toe of Italy and one can look on the right at the turquoise Tyrrhenian Sea and on the left enjoy the stunning views of the Ionian Sea! Catanzaro has been famous for its silk, damask and velvet since the Middle Ages and is now an idyllic spot for shopping and luxury goods. The city is rich in architectural and artistic heritage with its medieval centre, its Norman castle, churches and a museum which exhibits artefacts dating back to the Iron Age. The visitor can also enjoy a promenade in the botanic garden which has hundreds of specimen trees and over 20,000 Italian plants. Sellia marina is close to Le Castella, a town built on a rocky spur. Le Castella is full of history and legend as it is thought to have first been founded around 200BC by the great warrior Hannibal. And, according to Homer, it was the home of the Greek sea nymph, Calypso, where she kept the hero Ulysses imprisoned for many years. Le Castella has a good selection of shops and restaurants as well as a new marina.
Activities
Between the properties and the sandy beach, there is a beautiful pine and eucalyptus wood, perfect to escape the heat of the summer, relaxing or reading in the shade. In the forest, there are paths and cycle routes as well as a children’s playground. Nearby, there is an open air theatre with an interesting programme of events during the summer. Sellia Marina being a few metres away from the Ionian Sea, water activities are very much appreciated: canoeing, swimming, scuba diving, sailing, fishing, jet skiing, wind surfing, deep sea diving… The Sila Mountains are close-by too and are perfect to explore on guided tours or for trekking. In May, the town organises a three day festival to celebrate its Patron Saint, St Nicholas.
Food and local specialities
Catanzaro is famous in the South of Italy for the production of pasta and olive oil and also for its red pepper. The “peperoncino” is known to be good for your health… and is also thought to be an aphrodisiac. Catanzaro is home to “Nduja”, a soft spicy salami that can be spread on bread. The area reflects the Calabrian gastronomy with its typical dishes, simple but rich of strong and genuine tastes, which comes from its country and sea long tradition. The Calabrian ground gives special olives, citruses, vegetables and wine, which characterize in an unmistakable way the tastes of the typical dishes.
