The development:
Just a few metres away from the beach, Baia di Mezzaluna is a small and charming development offering 7 luxury villas with gardens and solariums. The design of the villas is unique as they were built in a semi circular shape to echo the half moon bay they are set in. The architect used local materials to ensure elegant, modern and Italian style properties. The 2 bedroom/2 bathroom detached villas are light and airy and make the best of the fabulous climate. They all have a large solarium and gardens to relax and make the most of the Calabrian sunshine. Every villa has stunning views of the sea, Stromboli and the legendary Aeolian Island, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
The location:
The development overlooks the charming Zambrone: Set in acacia and oak woods, the town is made up of 4 hamlets and has an impressive 7km long white sandy beach. It has a wide range of restaurants, bars and nightclubs but also historic monuments to see and cultural events to attend. Zambrone dates back to medieval times and archaeologists have even found items from the Palaeolithic period! A few religious buildings can be visited as well, and most of them were surprisingly built recently: the church of San Carlo Borromeo was built in the 1950s in a 19th century style. In August, Zambrone organises a tambourine festival which celebrates local music: traditional instruments are the pipita, lira, organ, drum and tambourine. The nearby buzzing town of Tropea is known as the St Tropez of southern Italy and is the fashionable centre of Calabria. Fun lovers will enjoy the myriad of friendly bars and restaurants while tourists will be delighted by the historical aspect of the city: Tropea is famous for its narrow streets, its lovely cliff edge houses, the 12th century cathedral and beautiful period buildings.
Activities:
Baia di Mezzaluna being only a few metres away from the beach, water sports are very much appreciated including canoeing, swimming, scuba diving, sailing, fishing, jet skiing, wind surfing, deep sea diving… Boat cruises to the Aeolian Islands or Stromboli can now be booked thanks to the attractive new marina in Tropea. Cycling, horse riding or tennis are also available activities. In addition, the development is only 15km from the Feudo Montalto golf course and 50km from ski slopes!
Food and local specialities:
Many villages around Tropea produce a particular type of red onion. In Italy these onions are so famous that cipolla di Tropea (“Tropea onion” or “Tropea’s onion”) has become an Italian synonym for all red onions. One of the gelaterias in town, Tonino in the Corso, even makes a red onion ice cream! There is also a spicy and creamy pork salami locally produced, the Nduja.
Also, most of the cuisine of Calabria is heavily influenced by Mediterranean cuisine. The Southern warm climate all year round is perfect for growing fruit, vegetables and grapes, for delicious wines, as well as olive groves. The sea provides a source of wonderful fresh fish too. The distinctive local cuisine is not only delicious but healthy in the bargain.
